 THE APPLICATION PROCESS

We are looking for mature, motivated students who are willing to take on the challenge of living and studying overseas. Studying abroad is not for everyone, but we encourage you to apply if you are a student with a sincere desire to study —and experience first-hand —the Spanish language, culture, history, art and literature.

ACADEMIC READINESS

Because we want to ensure that your IUS study abroad experience is positive and academically productive, we ask that you refer to the following table as you plan your program of study.

Course Level For Which You Apply

Spanish Study Required

Advanced (Level 300 +)

2 years (4 semesters) college level or experimental equivalent

Intermediate

1 year (2 semesters) college or 3 years high school level or experiential equivalent

Beginning

no previous experience with Spanish required

Note: As a guideline, we strongly recommend that you have an overall cumulative grade point average of 2.5 (on a 4-point scale) if you are currently enrolled in school.

HOW TO APPLY

  • The first step is to obtain approval from your college advisor for your study abroad plans.
  • Then email or call IUS toll-free and request that we send you an application packet. The packet includes an application form, a health statement and a housing profile o for you to fill out, plus two evaluations which are to be filled out by your instructors, one of whom should be familiar with your current level of Spanish. The Application packet can also be downloaded (clik here).
  • Return your completed packet to IUS before the applicable deadline as housing is assigned on a first-come, first-served basis. Be sure to include the following items:
  • your application, filled out completely.
  • a 150-word essay describing your academic goals, your reasons for wanting to study in Spain, and your expectations.
  • the Statement of Health, completed and signed.
  • the Housing Profile, completed.
  • 2 college ID size photographs. If the photographs are not the proper size, we will not be able to get you your student ID and you will have to do so and pay for it yourself once you are here. Photocopied photographs are not acceptable.
  • 1 photocopy of your student I.D.
  • Next, have your instructors complete their evaluations and send them to IUS directly.
  •  Then promptly request that official transcripts of all your college-level work be sent to IUS.

If you have any questions or need assistance, please contact the IUS.
