To American college students with a sincere desire to speak the Spanish language and understand the Spanish culture, IUS offers since 1993 a quality extension of a liberal arts education.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES

Our goal at IUS is to offer a study abroad program that provides you the highest quality opportunity for academic, cultural and personal enrichment. We support that goal with the following commitments:

IUS will provide the instruction and support you need to speak and understand the Spanish language to the best of your ability.

IUS will provide the experiential contact that will help you develop deeper insights into the cultural and artistic heritage of the Spanish people.

IUS will introduce you to the cultural and artistic heritage of Latin American nations.

IUS will facilitate and encourage your participation in Spanish society.

IUS will ensure that you have a safe and healthy experience.

"IUS is the best. When teaching anything, the professors always made sure we understood everything, and if we didn't, they didn't hesitate to explain. They were very friendly and willing to help in and outside the classroom."
Silburn Dehaney • Ursinus College

THE IUS ADVANTAGE

If you are seeking a challenging and exciting learning experience that allows you to immerse yourself in the Spanish language and culture, consider the advantages of the IUS study abroad program:

Academic

You choose your classes from a range of beginning, intermediate and advanced-level courses, many of which may fulfill core curriculum requirements at your home university or college.

With the exception of SPAN 101, SPAN 102, SPAN 329 and EDUC 385 in which Spanish and English are used in class and SPAN 344 which is taught in English (please see Course Descriptions section), all your IUS classes are taught totally in Spanish by Spanish instructors.

You are guaranteed a low student-teacher ratio.

If you have strong Spanish language skills, you may register for courses at the University of Seville and attend classes with other American or native Spanish students.

You may attend IUS for a complete fall or spring semester, or register for a 3-week intensive program during the summer or winter.

You may select courses on Women's Issues and a number of other interesting topics, in addition to our full range of language courses.

You may set up a Special Study Project to pursue a course of study outside the IUS curriculum.

Cultural

You will live and study in beautiful, historical Seville, Spain.

You will be able to immerse yourself in the culture you are studying.

You will participate in excursions and visits to sites in and around Seville.

You will observe local holidays and will take part in local celebrations.

You can choose to practice your Spanish with a local student who is learning English.

Personal

IUS will arrange lodging for you with a local Spanish family that has experience hosting American students.

Your room and board includes three meals a day, seven days a week, plus laundry once a week.

IUS will provide outstanding student support services to assist you with travel, health, financial and personal needs and we provide health, accident and life insurance at no additonal cost.

IUS can even arrange for you to continue with extracurricular activities, such as music lessons, so you don't fall behind while you are abroad.

IUS STAFF

The IUS study abroad program is supported by an outstanding staff of instructors and administrative personnel, many of whom have lived or studied in the United States. All our staff are experienced in working with American students and strive to create a memorable learning experience for every IUS student.

IUS Director Dr. J. Daniel Garcia earned his Ph.D. in Peninsular Spanish Studies at the University of Maryland and has taught in both the United States and in Spain. Dr. Garcia, who resides in Seville, has directed study abroad programs since 1988. In addition to serving on the IUS teaching staff, he also advises students on academic, personal and administrative issues.

"The trips were all well organized and very interesting."
